Things you should never flush down your toilet
The toilet is part of our everyday lives, used by many people many times a day. It is so important to our health that it operates correctly, yet we don’t seem to pay it the respect that it deserves!
Toilets operate correctly when used correctly, they are not garbage disposals and if used as such can result in blockages and expensive repairs.

- Flushable toilet wipes – you are confused now aren’t you? The packaging says flushable so surely you can flush them? Whilst the manufacturer of these products have labelled them as flushable, water providers around the country have advised they are spending in excess of $15m per year clearing blockages caused by the flushing of items such as wet wipes. Just because it is flushable doesn’t mean that it breaks down like toilet paper. Now if the companies are paying $15m out per year to clear blockages, think for a minute where that cost will end up being applied! That’s right, it will get passed on to the consumer. Think also of the impact that this has on our environment.
- Sanitary Items- tampons are NOT biodegradable, we understand that these items can be messy and tricky to dispose of in a hygienic manner but continuing to flush them down your toilet can lead to drain blockages, you could end up having sewage backing up into your garden or house.
- Dental Floss- This would never enter my mind to flush down the toilet but people do do it! Floss can wind around parts of septic systems and burn out motors
- Cat faeces from cat litter trays – Do you scoop the poop from your kitty litter tray and then flush it down the toilet? This is a big no no, the cat litter is made from clay and sand and dehydrates the faeces leaving hard clumps which can get lodged in your pipes
- Condoms – These can clog your toilets, just put them in the bin Fellas!!
