How to identify if you have a leak.
Leaks can be sneaky and sometimes you won’t even know that one is occurring until you receive your water bill.
Warning signs to look out for:
Pressure changes – changes to the pressure in your taps and showers can indicate a leak, have you noticed that all of a sudden the tap that used to seem like Niagara Falls was pumping it now seems as though the it is trying to source water from a dry well? If you notice changes to your water pressure in your house don’t ignore them, follow the steps below to identify if a leak is present.
Moisture and Mould – Have you noticed mould appearing anywhere in your house? Leaks can be hidden anywhere in a house from pipes in foundations, walls and outside the house, leaks don’t just come from the roof. If you see signs of mould in your bathrooms, laundry or kitchen call us straight away.
Then there is the obvious sign – Increased water bill – if you bill has increased but you haven’t implemented changes in your household (such as filling a swimming pool) then this could be an indication of a leak somewhere on your property.
Handy tip – If a leak is a concealed leak and you receive a large water bill, in some instances the water supply company / council, may have a provision to provide some type of financial assistance such as reduction in charges. Please be aware that there may be specific requirements to apply for these remedies, such as:
· Specified notification period after the detection of a leak,
· purpose of the premises e.g. residential and not for profit
· issue must be fixed by a licensed plumber
Review your leak review the policies from your water provider, for people in the Cairns region this is the Cairns Regional Council.
Now you think you have a leak, how do you know?
The water meter for your property will be located at the front of your property and will have a tap at one end. Turn off the water to the house and make sure that any fixtures in the property have the water turned off (toilet cisterns, washing machines etc,) open the water meter at your property, if the numbers on the meter are still turning even though all the water is turned off then you may have a leak.
Identification of a leak is best left to a Plumber, knowing where to look for leaks and having the appropriate equipment will make detection and rectification quicker.
