1 second, that's all it takes, 1 second with a water temperature at 60°C to cause third degree burns.
At 55°C third degree burns take 10 seconds to occur
At 50°C third degree burns take five minutes to occur
According to 2013 statistics 200,000 people in Australia suffer burns on an annual basis, costing over $150 million per annum!
Prevention is always better than a cure, the safest and simplest solution to minimise burns & scalds is to ensure that you have the correct safety measure in place.
Tempering Valves!
Tempering valves are installed to minimise the risk of scalds, particularly for the young and the elderly and are a Legal requirement on all new hot water system installations, renovations and new buildings. A tempering valve is installed to reduce the temperature to taps to between 35°C & 50°C in domestic use and to a maximum of 45°C in facilities for the young and the elderly.
As a tempering valve is also a safety valve, it is recommended that the valve be serviced every year and replaced every 4 years. This must be completed by a Licensed Plumber and a Form 4 - Notifiable works document is required to be lodged to council on replacement.
The chances are that if you haven't had your hot water system changed recently or inspected that you might not have a tempering valve installed at your house or investment property.
If you have an investment property we would strongly recommend that you install and maintain a tempering valve, the last thing you want is tenants getting scalded!
