Have you ever gone to have a shower and realised you have no hot water?
Has the temperature suddenly dropped without warning? If this has happened you might have found yourself asking do I need to contact a Plumber or an Electrician?
As we all know Plumbers are responsible for installing a hot water system and electrician's deal with thermostat's and elements, but how do you know who to call you suddenly have no hot water?
There are a few handy tricks you can do to determine who you should call.
1.- Check how old your hot water system is - the usual life span of a unit is 10-15 years. If the unit is older than this you may to consider changing the hot water unit as often the system could be nearing the end of useful life and any repairs may only be short term

2. Check and see if your system has a tempering valve installed (refer below picture) If there is not one installed then it is likely to be an electrical issue.
3. If you have a tempering valve installed then release the Pressure Relief Valve, if hot water comes out of the pipe then your element and thermostat would appear to be working as the unit is heating the water. You will most likely have an issue with the tempering valve. In this case you would need to engage a plumber. If the water was to come out cold then the issue would most likely be electrical and you would need an electrician to investigate the thermostat and element.
