the majority of the work that you see contestants performing on these programs is the planning, painting and styling. In the rare case that you see a contestant on “the tools” it is because they have the correct licences and qualifications to perform the works. Believe me when I tell you that an unlicensed person would not be installing a hot water system or drainage pipes!!
Plumbing and Gas Fitting is a highly-regulated industry. Strict regulations are in place to ensure that works are only undertaken by qualified licensed persons.
Given the amount of hardware stores that are open to the public and the vast array of goods you can purchase from them, you may be surprised to learn that as an unlicensed person you can do very little in regards to Plumbing (refer to your local governing body to see what you can undertake at your home).
In addition to regulations you also must consider your insurance on your property. Tradesmen have Public Liability Insurance to cover their workmanship, if you cause damage to your property from undertaking your own works you may find that your insurance company won’t honour your claim leaving you to cover any restoration works yourself.
DIY can save you money if it is done right, but it can cost more than it can save if done incorrectly. When considering DIY key points for consideration are:
· What is your budget? – what do you want to include in your remodel? Consider the cost of labour for the job and allocate accordingly.
· Planning – If you are planning on moving your toilet or sinks this will have an impact on the cost, don’t relocate your sink or shower if you do not have to!
· Measurements – Make sure that you have the correct measurements for the job. Remember the saying “measure twice, cut once”
· Try to re-use materials where possible, no need throwing out items that can be re-used
· Have you got other issues that require fixing? Consider fixing all these at the same time to save on costs.
· Allow sufficient time for the renovations to be completed and make sure that trades are co-ordinated as required
· Engage a contractor to assist you
