Water Pressures and Product Warranties
Have you ever experienced the headaches of having your newly purchased plumbing products failing barely a week’s into their lifespan, only to have to deal with a warranty department which sometimes isn’t even located in Australia, and a service agent who is paid to be their representative not yours??
Have you ever experienced the headaches of having your newly purchased plumbing products failing barely a week’s into their lifespan, only to have to deal with a warranty department which sometimes isn’t even located in Australia, and a service agent who is paid to be their representative not yours??
Trust me when I tell you, 99% of the time this can be prevented by taking a few simple preventative measures.
Things to keep in mind:
· Are you aware your warranty is likely to be voided if the fixture is not installed by a correctly licenced plumbing/gas fitting tradesperson. (check the manufacturer’s warranty paperwork when the new fixtures are being purchased.) Not advisable to do DIY’S.
· While your plumber is installing the new products for you, get them to check your water pressure. This is the single biggest contributor to failure in all new plumbing products.
Generally, all fixtures have a minimum pressure rating of 150kpa (300kpa for shower/bath diverters) and a maximum pressure rating, which is generally 500kpa.
(AS/NSZ 3500.1-2003 (Clause 3.3.4) specifies 500kPa maximum water supply pressure at any outlet within a building for new installations.)
If your pressure is higher than that, to comply with your warranties you will need to install a Pressure Limiting Valve to reduce the amount of water pressure to your fixtures. The only place where this rule does not apply is when the pipework is supplying fire service outlets.
· Check that your hot water temperature does not exceed 75 degrees at your water outlets.
· Other devices must not be fitted to the outlet of tapware or tap (for example water filters);
· Non-approved water flow regulating devices must not be fitted to the system (check for a watermark sticker on product or search for on this link. The products which are listed on here have been rigorously tested in Australia to become compliant with our Australia Standards. · Outlet aerator inserts on your tapware must be regularly cleaned and replaced.
· The plumbing installation to your property is functional and compliant with Australian standards and local council regulations.
· If you are living off grid / self-sufficient it is advisable to check the hardness and properties which are in your water supply as they may influence what type of fixtures that will best suit you requirements.
